Southpaw

Yes, it’s a cat poem, so scratch me. Art by RS Grafiko

My cat is a lefty.

When my writing

Is interrupted

By a hairball

Blocking my stanzas.

He bats me

Into sense

With a left hook

To the pant leg

Snagging my sock

Giving me that dilated

Cat-eye look

of poetic importance

That would melt a thousand

Lovers’ hearts.

He has those pupils

I long to perfect

Rolls to reveal his tender belly

Like a dog of words

Softest fur exposed.

As I try to step over him

On my way for a second

Glass of inspiration

He counters with a right

Claw caught firmly in my verse

  1. Terrific piece! Charlie and Prudie salute you and Mr. Fry. As do I.

  2. Wonderful portrayal of cat helping writer — mine does it, too. She likes to touch my touch-screen with her paws, rotating the view, making the icons bigger or smaller, etc. Takes her two seconds to mess it up and me, two hours to fix it. 🙂

  3. After I asked to reblog your post she told me she already follows you. She loves cats. Thanks for the permission….:)

  4. Very similar. My cat gets up on two legs, bracing himself with his front paws on my chair, and always reaches with his left paw, gently catching me with his claws. Sometimes he wants to get pet. Other times when he does it, he’ll run towards the kitchen, hoping I’ll follow.

  5. I loved this! My cat will sit and gently extend his paw until he taps your leg and then when you bend to pet him he sits on his hind legs and stands up with both front paws high in the air! Then he’ll grab your hand with his front paws and pull it down to him. So cute 🙂

  6. That cat is a powerful muse and a hard critic. But the results is worth it!
