Linear

The mist stifles all sound, confines sight

Numbs time, suspends the linear

Encloses you in tentative comfort

While scaring you with limitations

You find yourself worried about the quiet

Near the shallow ripples of the lake

Where the hills slant their hardest towards the shore

And the moss smells of old summer

But time isn’t looking for you

Even though you’re looking for it.

  1. “Encloses you in tentative comfort While scaring you with limitations.” Like being blind but comfortable, yet fearing what I can’t see beyond my current situation.

  2. I know this will sound corny.. but… in red dawn (the original) there was this line charlie sheen said …. “hey jed, notice how the mountains pay us no mind” , this kind of reminded me of that, as much as we look, or think we are hamstringing this thing called the world, we are just temporary passengers for sure.

  3. This morning a farm next to where I live was completely enshrouded in mist. Only the undulations of the land could be sensed, rarely seen.

Your Linear poem captured what I was feeling. Not so much fear since I was not on the shoreline but looking out from my deck. But that sense of suspended time. Thanks for your beautiful poem.
